How to turn your Facebook Place into a Facebook Page

Convert your Facebook place into a page

When lots of companies and individuals create a Facebook page, Facebook will automatically turn it into a ‘Facebook Place’.

This can be annoying for those companies as it isn’t what they expect when they create their page.

This article will highlight the differences between a Facebook place and a Facebook page, and then tell you how to turn your Facebook place into a page.

What’s the difference between a Facebook page and a place?

Facebook Pages

A Facebook page is the standard business page. It is an area on Facebook where companies can interact with the audience.

The page will allow your audience to ‘like’ you. This means that your updates will appear in their news feeds amongst their friends updates.

Facebook will provide your page with ‘insights’. This is their name for page analytics.

It allows you to see your ‘like’ growth, demographics of your audience, and statistics about your individual posts.

Facebook Places

A Facebook place has the same functionality as the pages; however it is aimed at the companies or organisations that have a physical location.

This is useful if your company is a coffee shop or estate agents where you want people to come into your store.

Additional options are available within the page admin; these allow you to specify your company location and state additional information, such as parking availability.

The most significant difference between a Place and Page is the check in functionality. This allows visitors to your location to say that they have been to your location through a mobile device.

You can use adverts that target people who have checked into your location or give special deals to those visitors.

When a visitor checks in, a message goes out on their news feed that lets their friends know they are at your location, this is a great opportunity to promote your business through the Facebook news feed, for very little cost.

Unfortunately, a place can’t deal with multiple locations.

If your company is spread across different addresses, I would suggest you either create multiple places for each location, or combine all the places into a page (combining is the preferred option here).

How to tell if your Facebook page is a place

There a few ways to determine if whether you have a Facebook place or page:

  1. Type the page name into the search bar – You will see either a ‘Pages’ or ‘Places’ title
  2. On your page, if there is a ‘were here’ option under the title, you have a place
  3. If there is a map on the about page, it’s likely you have a place

Convert your Facebook place to a page

Changing your place to a page is very simple:

Update your Facebook page category:

  1. Go to your page
  2. Click ‘Edit page
  3. Click ‘Update Info
  4. Select any category other than ‘Local businesses’

Remove your location:

  1. Go to your page
  2. Click ‘Edit page
  3. Click ‘Update info
  4. Remove your address, City / town and postcode
  5. To the right of the ‘Address’ field, there is a dropdown, click the down arrow and then ‘No physical street address
  6. Click ‘Save changes’ at the bottom
  7. Go back to the address section, there will now be a yellow box. Click ‘remove this Place
Change Facebook place to page
Remove the Facebook place

And that is all there is to it. This change might take up to 24 hours to come into effect, however it is normally changed quicker than that.

If you want to change back to a Facebook place, just add in your address again!

I did it and it still says its a place. Do I have to wait over 24 hours?

    • http://www.stuffedweb.com/ Sam Scholfield

      Hi CSuared2,

The change rate is variable unfortunately, it will sometimes change instantly, others you do have to wait a little while.

Let me know if it changes ok! – Sam

  • vivconterio

Great post! I am having a similar issue and I cannot get this to work. Issue: I created a FB Page. Now the page does not show up on the searches, only the FB places pages. I have requested several times to have it merged, but no response. I need to have the actual page show up and not the places page. Would you mind taking a quick look?
The page is First National Bank of South Miami. It is listed as a Company under category not a local business. Can you please let me know what I need to do? I don’t want to remove their address from the info. They want to leave it in there. Help me please…

    • http://www.stuffedweb.com/ Sam Scholfield

Hi Vivconterio, thank you for commenting!

You can merge your pages manually, Facebook have a guide that will talk you through merging your pages.

Regarding the search, your page is actually showing up under both pages and places – which is odd. You can see it by searching for your page and clicking the ‘See more results’ link, then selecting either places or pages in the left menu.

Removing the page as a place is very difficult without removing the address. This is because the ‘check in’ functionality will always be there while you have an address. If someone checks into your location, your page will automatically become a place.

In your case, I think you should embrace being a place, especially as your ‘were here’ stat is very good compared to the like numbers.

      I hope that helps!!

Thank you! Our company can now be searched on mobile devices. Funny how incredibly simple it is – just remove your address. Ha. I was making it more complicated. I appreciate it!

This is very useful. My problem is I do not have a preference tab in my Settings link, so I am unable to post from my personal page to my business page. Rosalyn Traylor

    • http://www.stuffedweb.com/ Sam Scholfield

      Hi Rosalyn,

Thanks for commenting! I’m a little confused to your problem. If you are trying to post onto your Facebook page as yourself (not with the page username) there should be a link in the top banner called ‘Voice’. If you click ‘Voice’ it should open a small section that allows you to post as yourself instead of your page.

      Is that any help?

This was extremely helpful. I’m the new marketing person at my company so I now have control of the Facebook page. I noticed that it was a place instead of a page and I was so afraid I was going to have to start from scratch. Thank you for your help!

I have a question, we have a page that is a ‘place’ someone else created, but it’s our business and we are trying to take that place so we can merge it with our page that we just created. Is there any way that its possible? I’ve looked at plenty of other “places” and it has the option to claim it “is this your business” being in the settings but this page for some reason doesn’t have the option.

    • http://www.stuffedweb.com/ Sam Scholfield

      Hi Amber,

I’m sorry to hear your having problems. This is normally because someone else has claimed your page.

First, go to the ‘place’ and click on the cog to double check that the “is this your page” link hasn’t moved to there.

If not, you need to report the page. Here are some links for you to go through:
      1. This page tells you what you need to submit for the trademark infringement
      2. At the bottom of that link, there is a ‘form’ link which you then need to submit your information to.

Unfortunately, other than waiting for Facebook to process this form (which they are normally very slow) the only other option is to send a message to the page owner and just ask them to make you an admin.

When you come to merging the pages, please be aware that the names need to be the same, and the page with the lower number of likes will merge into the one with more likes.

Let me know how you get on, or if there is anything else I can help with.

  • Patty

I have a friend who is an organic farmer and his FB profile is set up as a place. He does of course have a physical address. However, I can not share anything on his page. For instance, I found a post on someone’s page and I wanted to share it with this farmer. His name does not appear on the drop down menu when it asks who I’d like to share this with. Is this because he’s a place and not a page? Or some other setting? Thanks for your help Sam.

    • http://www.stuffedweb.com/ Sam Scholfield

Hi Patty, great to see you here!

This is normally because of a setting with the page. In Settings > Manage Permissions, you will see three settings: ‘Posting ability’, ‘Post visibility’ and ‘Post tagging’. Make sure that all of these options are ticked.

These are the settings that allow others to post on the page. It might take a couple of days for these settings to update.

Other than that, this can happen because a page is new (under three weeks) or because you haven’t clicked ‘like’ on their page yet.

If it’s none of those, let me know the page name and I will take a look to see if I can replicate it.
I hope that helps – let me know how it goes.

Need some Help – We had a personal facebook page for a business but just the other day made a business page for it instead and are shutting down the personal page but for some reason it wont let our customers “check in” to the new page even though its listed as a local business and the map is correct. http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/On-Target-Stl/470942446283677?fref=ts thats the page and it says 0 check ins because it wont let anyone check into it. Would love to see if you had any idea on why this is happening..thanks!!

    • http://www.stuffedweb.com/ Sam Scholfield

      Hi Ryan, Thanks for commenting.

People can only check into your page from a mobile phone. This can either be on the web version of Facebook, or the Facebook app for smartphones.

Your customers will need to access Facebook on their phones, then click the ‘Check In’ option at the top right. They should then be able to select your page – I can’t test this for you as I’m not in your area.

Can I also suggest you claim your vanity URL? If you want the same URL as your old company page, then change that one first to free up the name, then change your page’s name. You can do this by clicking ‘Edit page’ > ‘Update info’ and adding a username.

Let me know if that helps at all or if you are still having problems.

How do I add the Locations app to my recently converted Facebook page (from a Facebook place)? I want to show a map with multiple locations like on http://www.facebook.com/lafitness. Help!

    • http://www.stuffedweb.com/ Sam Scholfield

      Hi Brian,

This type of thing is normally done using a third party tool. I’m not sure if there is already an application to allow you to do this – if there is, please let me know!! – But normally you would need to create a bit of code that creates your map (using Bing instead of Google maps in this case) and then use something like Static HTML application to show your map on your Facebook page.

      I hope that helps!
Let me know how you get on.

So here’s a stumper…Apple’s page is listed as both. Their address shows, they have 73K+ check-ins, over 7mln fans, and they’re listed at 1 infinite loop *and* if you run a FB search they’ll show under places and pages…I want that. Ideas?

    • http://www.stuffedweb.com/ Sam Scholfield

      Hi Elizabeth,

Unfortunately I believe you will be disappointed by this answer, so I apologise in advance:

Apple have created two pages, the first (page) has the vanity URL /AppleIncApp where as the Place doesn’t have a vanity URL (because it’s not the same page) – You will also notice that they both have a different number of fans. I wouldn’t recommend doing this as you will need to update the two pages and promote them both separately.

      I hope that helps!

    Hey Sam,

Great article, really helpful – as soon as I’ve sorted another issue I can convert our place to a page…

I’m not sure if you can help with my query, the admin guy has invited me to be a manager of our page (which is actually a place) but all I see when I login is a landing page for Facebook adverts which I can’t get past to access the ‘page’ or anything else. Any ideas?

    • http://www.stuffedweb.com/ Sam Scholfield

Hey Becky, great to see you here!

It sounds like they have made you a manager of their adverts account, not the page. Ask the admin guy to go into the Facebook page (not the adverts account) and double check the list of admins.

      I hope that helps,

How about two restaurants in the same city? Our first store location has 2,300 hard earned likes… and opening a new store this Spring in the same town. Would like the check in feature at both, but don’t want to start from scratch.

    • http://www.stuffedweb.com/ Sam Scholfield

      Hi Mikenolan99. Thanks for commenting!

Currently the functionality for locations is quite limited unless you belong to a rather large company – like Starbucks.

They released a location app back in April however this hasn’t been rolled out to all pages just yet – see InsideFacebook for an article on the locations app.

Unfortunately the only thing we can do is create a page for our company.

Let me know if you find out a good alternative!

  • Victor

    Hello,

Thank you for your assistance but I have a somewhat mirror image issue, meaning I want to turn a Facebook Page into a Facebook Place. I wanted to roll back all the steps but I encountered errors with the address. No matter how I typed it, it kept saying that the address couldn’t be found and confirmed, so people wouldn’t be able to check-in there. Also, when I try to change the category under Update Info, there is no “Local Businesses & Places”, only “Local Businesses”.

I’m looking forward to hearing from you as soon as possible!

    Thank you.

    • http://www.stuffedweb.com/ Sam Scholfield

      Hi Victor,

Thank you for commenting. I have updated ‘Local Businesses & Places’ to ‘Local Businesses’ – Facebook have renamed this since this post was created.

Regarding your address not being found, have you tried typing in your neighbours address and seeing if that shows up? If your company is in a building that contains multiple businesses, then you will often need to enter the buildings address instead of your address.

The last option I have, is to use a mobile phone and ‘Check in’ to your location, it will ask you where you are, enter the name of your business – This will create a place for you, but you can then merge that page with your own.

I’m sorry that I don’t have any simple answers for you.

Hi. I’ve recently created a business page, and used the category “local business” and then the sub-category “shopping and retail”. My problem is that although my hours show on the “About” page, they do not show up on the main page, in the light blue box that lists my sub-category, address and phone number. Do I need to change my sub-category, in order to get the Hours field to show up here? Seems like a “shopping and retail” sub-category would include the hours field, no? My page is for a rug store.

    • http://www.stuffedweb.com/ Sam Scholfield

Hey Annie! Great to see you here!

I have tried going through lots of different categories on some of my test pages, but none of them show the opening times in the about section on the main page. Have you seen this else where? If so can you send me a link?

Otherwise, an alternative could be to add the opening times to your banner image. This won’t infringe Facebook’s rules with the banner images as it’s not a call to action, it’s just information.

Sorry I can’t be any more help than that!

  • Elena Meadowcroft

Sam, thanks for the article, but it wasn’t very helpful in my situation, unfortunately. We manage several Facebook pages for the clients. All pages show up in FB search both as pages and places (not sure why or how). A new client had a place page that we claimed, but now we can’t convert it into the page. The thing is, we do want it to have an address and a map listing in the “about” section, since it’s a local business with a single location. However, as a place this page doesn’t show up in “all results” when you do a FB search for exact business name. The only way you find it is if you check under places – and not everyone knows to do that. Any suggestions are welcome! Thanks!

    • http://www.stuffedweb.com/ Sam Scholfield

      Hi Elena! Thanks for commenting!

This is normally because Facebook has found and indexed your page, but it just needs to propagate through to the rest of the results. Normally it’s just a case of growing your page and being a little patient, but it should go onto ‘All results’ pretty quick.

      I hope that helps!
      Sam

Thank you for your reply, Sam! I wasn’t sure if the page status or the fan count is to blame, but your answer makes sense.

so i have a business facebook business page and i am trying to get it to where people can check in to my business location. when you go to check in, it dosent pull up my business and if you type it in, it dosent recognize it but will allow you to add the name. but how do i get this to link with my page to show when someone checks in?

    • http://www.stuffedweb.com/ Sam Scholfield

Hey Andrew. Normally adding the address to the page will get all of this functionality working. It can take a couple of days for the settings to propagate through to the mobile devise, but it’s normally very quick.

Alternatively, if you open your page on your mobile you should see a check-in button, when your at the location, click ‘check-in’. This will sometimes allow Facebook to associate the location with the page.

I hope that gives you something to work with!

Good afternoon! I am very computer savvy and usually have no problems figuring things out but right now I am beside myself. I have a Facebook Page that I need to establish as a Facebook Place so I can enable check-ins. I have went to edit page – update info – Category is “Local Business” and box next to that is “Bank/Financial Services”. I thought that would be enough however when I go to check-in from my mobile it doesn’t show up. Please help!

    • http://www.stuffedweb.com/ Sam Scholfield

Hi Jon! Sorry to hear your having trouble with this.

OK the first things first, have you confirmed your page is now a place? i.e. does it appear in the search results under places, and have a checked in number?

If you have confirmed that, I’m afraid it’s just a matter of waiting. Facebook takes a bit of time to notice any changes to a page/place. If you don’t want to wait, you can checkin to your location and create a new page, you would then merge that page with your existing one and the settings *should* transfer across with it.

      I hope that helps!

I am having issues with my page and it recognizing the address I listed. This seems to prevent me from checking in…
When I enter the address I get a message saying: The address you entered could not be found. Adding a location makes it easier for people to find you and check in. Please make sure you entered the correct information.

The address is correct and there is actually another company just one suite away from me who has the ability to check in. How can I correct the issue?

    • http://www.stuffedweb.com/ Sam Scholfield

      Hey Justin!

I was actually presented with this issue not long ago as well.
I entered in a different (real) address to see if it recognised it, it did, then I typed in my address again and it worked.
Give that a try, if not, change your company type to something other than local business, it was only when I selected this option that I was faced with this error.

I hope that helps, let me know how you get on.

Thank you. We recently changed the name of our business and created a new page. None of us could update our employment status with the the new business name/page. Hi Dave,
I feel your pain! They don’t seem to want to help businesses achieve their goals through their platform and are reliant on the shear weight of popularity – which forces businesses to use the platform despite the troubles.

I have my page’s address on there but when I try to look up its name or address on Maps it doesn’t show up. Help please.

    • http://www.stuffedweb.com/ Sam Scholfield

      Hi Jes,

I’m sorry to hear your having problems. Which maps system are you using? Is it not finding the address within the Facebook page settings? Does it find the address next door to you – sometimes that can kick the Facebook address functionality into gear.

      Thanks,
      Sam

  • http://www.facebook.com/raj9849 Krish Nam

its showing me: “We couldn’t determine the location from the provided address. Make sure to enter a valid address” under the address bar

    what is this?

    • http://www.stuffedweb.com/ Sam Scholfield

Hi Krish, Great to see you here!

This has been reported to me quite a few times recently – I think with the new facebook search they must have created a bug with the address fields.

One thing to try – Enter in the address next door to you, Facebook will often find this, if you then click save, and re-enter your address this will often go through.

The second thing to try is changing your Place’s category.

I’m afraid I don’t have a definite answer, but changing both of those have helped some people.

I had a personal page and opened a business page recently…whenever I am logged in under my business page and try to from an outside post share to it, it forces me to go back to my personal and post there…why is that? I don’t want my business postings on my personal page…

    • http://www.stuffedweb.com/ Sam Scholfield

Hi Judith. Great to see you here!

That sounds like an odd error – You should be able to use Facebook as your page, go else where on Facebook, click ‘Share’ and see “share as (your page name)”. Have you tried sharing something and seeing where it goes? If it goes onto your profile you can always delete it.

One thing to check – At the top of Facebook, make sure your actually using Facebook as your page – you should be able to see your page’s profile picture and name instead of your profiles – if it’s your profile picture, click the cog and click on the page name that you would like to use Facebook as.

      I hope that helps!

  • http://www.buraq-technologies.com/ ambreen11

Great explanation! I have a question about pages. With doing this can you use blocking options and delete people like profiles?

    • http://www.stuffedweb.com/ Sam Scholfield

Hey Ambreen11! Great to see you here.

You can’t pre-block someone, however you can ban them from your page if they have commented on a post. Just click the ‘X’ when you hover over their comment, delete it as spam, then click ‘Ban user’.

      I hope that helps!

I have a personal page and a business page which I think is a Place and a Page. When I want to add my business page’s location to photos nothing comes up. How do I
    get it to do this?

    • http://www.stuffedweb.com/ Sam Scholfield

Hi Yvonne, sorry to hear your having problems with this. I believe Facebook are having problems with their location services at the moment, over the past couple of weeks I have had an increased number of people saying their locations aren’t showing. So I’m afraid there isn’t a fix for this other than to try again soon. Sorry I can’t be more help!

Hey Sam, thanks for a great explanation. I have a problem with my Facebook place. I created it 2 weeks ago, but it still doesn’t appear in the list of locations, where I want to check in. Even if I put the actual address. The address is set up correctly, I can also see the map. Could you please help me? Did I forget about anything?

    • http://www.stuffedweb.com/ Sam Scholfield

Hey Miroslav! Thanks for the comment.

From the sounds of it you haven’t done anything wrong. Facebook can take up to a month to provide new pages with their functionality – I have no idea why it takes so long.

One thing you can try that sometimes works – go to your location and attempt to checkin – you can then create a new place at your location, name this EXACTLY the same as your existing place. You then need to claim this new place as your own, then merge it with your existing page. This is a bit of a painful process, but it can often kick start the checkin functionality.

I hope that helps, let me know how you get on.

Hey Sam, I created a Facebook local business page for check-in. It is visible in Facebook search but is not visible in check-in list. I got 12 likes on the page. What should i do to make it visible in check-in list? Physical address was already provided.

    • http://www.stuffedweb.com/ Sam Scholfield

Hi Sugar Shan! Great to see you here.

It seems Facebook has been having some issues with their check-in functionality recently (I’ve been receiving messages about this issue a lot more than normal). If your location is appearing in the search results, it’s normally just a matter of waiting until the checkin functionality kicks in.

However if that doesn’t happen, you can jump start the functionality by going to your location, checking into to it – this will ask you to create a place – Give the new place exactly the same name as your existing page, claim the new place and merge it with your existing page. This is a bit of a painful process so I would suggest waiting it out before you try this.

Sorry I don’t have a quick solution for you, but let me know how you get on.
      Sam

      • http://www.facebook.com/tamara.bonnar Tamara Bonnar

THANK YOU!!! Took me ages to find this solution… this is the only thing that has worked. I had a Page but it wouldn’t allow clients to ‘check-in’ so clients were creating their own Places. I managed to Claim ownership of the Places then merge them with my official Page… now my page shows up all the Likes and now the Were Here. Job done! Thanks again Sam :)

Hey Tamara! Great to hear it’s worked for you! Thank you for letting me know.

Hello Sam, I have a question for you about changing a FB Place to a FB
Company Page. I see that it’s relatively easy to do this and my Place
Likes will carry over to my new Page. However, one of my co-workers
also programmed a custom App (a branded landing page). If I switch from
a Place to a Page, will I lose that App?

    • http://www.stuffedweb.com/ Sam Scholfield

      Hi Mike! Thanks for commenting!
When you convert your place to a page, the only thing that will change is you lose your address – the consequence of this is that you no longer have the map on the about us section and people can’t check in to your location. Other than that, everything remains the same. So your custom app will remain and function exactly as it currently is.
I hope that helps! Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.

Great article – I have a facebook fan page and recently created two facebook places for my two physical locations, and people can now check in. Unfortunately i cannot get the suggest photos feature to work when editing the places. It updated all my other information but will not choose the photo from my website. I see other places have a photo, but mine only has a graphic. Can you help?

    • http://www.stuffedweb.com/ Sam Scholfield

Hi Liz, great to see you here!

Can you send me a link to your place? There are currently two different types of places on Facebook, the first you should be able to click where the image should be, then upload (or select) your picture.

The second, you click where the photo should be, but then get taken to the ‘places editor’. To get the image, you first need to enter a URL to your website, or a website for the location, you then need to click one image from the suggested images that *should* appear. Then click ‘Next place’ to save the changes.

Either way, make your you have claimed the page – click the cog in the top right and state you are the owner. This makes changing things on the place a lot easier.

I hope that helps, let me know how you get on!

Hey MBRT – great to see you here.

Yes that is certainly possible, you will need to go into your settings and enter your full address and click save. (you may need to update your category as well).

      That’s it :)

      Hey Robert,

You just need to go to your place, and attach a photo the wall, that will automatically go into your ‘photos’ section.
Alternatively, you can go to your ‘photos’ section and upload an album :)

Interesting. I have just claimed my 7 place pages (restaurants) and am wondering the best way to handle them. If I combine all the places into a page as you suggest, will people still be able to check in at my restaurants? I may want to do some specific targeted marketing to each location as well, so maybe I’m better off leaving them as individual place pages? Also I have another major problem, each of the places have less than 200 likes, yet the automated system on FB will not allow me to change the name (currently they’re all named the same which is a nightmare for me to differentiate the pages easily). I’ve tried many name combinations and read all the rules on it, and it rejects all of them. Any help would be awesome, thanks!

    • http://www.stuffedweb.com/ Sam Scholfield

      Hey Amanda, great questions!

As you have multiple restaurants, it really is your call on merging the pages. You will only be able to use the check in functionality in one of the locations, not all of them, so if you plan on doing location based marketing, you shouldn’t merge them.

However if you don’t, then I’d suggest merging your pages as it makes it a lot easier to manage and maintain your page, plus you won’t lose any likes in the process.

Regarding the name change, I haven’t encountered that problem before, could you send me a link one of the pages that your having a problem with so I can take a look for you?

      Thanks!
      Sam

      • http://www.facebook.com/amanda.kerrsanders Amanda Kerr Sanders

Thanks so much for the reply, I just saw this. One of the pages is here https://www.facebook.com/timhortons2403. I’m trying to paste screenshots in here to show you, but it won’t let me. If you’re able to provide me with an email address I could send you screenshots. But basically I have 45 likes on this page, I’m trying to change the name from “Tim Hortons” to “Tim Hortons United Boulevard”, and every time I get the error “Our automated system will not allow that name”. Same scenario for all 7 of my place pages that I own.

I’ve spent so much time researching this and trying to contact FB, but nothing. You’re the first one to respond to an inquiry I’ve made, and I have a big opportunity to promote my page this Friday if I can get the name issue rectified. If you help me I will owe you big time and I will be sending you a thank you gift card if you send me your mailing address. THANK YOU!!!!

        • http://www.stuffedweb.com/ Sam Scholfield

          Hi Amanda,

OK that makes sense. The first thing to try is using a different browser. Facebook frequently throws up errors when it has an issue with a particular browser – this is normally caused by the browser updating, or becoming out of date – I would suggest using Chrome if you’re not already.

Otherwise, would you be open to the idea of adding me to your administrators list? That way I can take a look and try to make the name change myself – this will either work, or highlight the error for me. If so, then you will need to add me as your friend first, here’s my profile, then I will remove myself once I have taken a look.

Let me know if that’s not an option and I will see if I can find another cause.
          Sam

          • http://www.facebook.com/amanda.kerrsanders Amanda Kerr Sanders

OMG!!! Just downloaded Chrome and it worked for one page, I’m assuming it will work for the rest… you are a gem! I’ve just added you as a friend on FB (not sure if I did it as me or Tim Hortons), I would like to message you if you don’t mind. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!

  • LD

Hi there I have been given the task of managing my company’s facebook profiles. They lost access to the original one which was a page and a new one was created which seems to be a place. Access was recently regained to the old “page” profile. All of the most recent posts however (last 2 years) are on the newer “place” profile. It is a non profit and people don’t come to our physical address much so there’s no real need to check in. I’m thinking we should merge the two pages so there is no duplication or confusion. Is there anything I need to be aware of when doing so, and do I need to claim and convert the “place” profile to a “page” profile prior to attempting to merge them?

    • http://www.stuffedweb.com/ Sam Scholfield

      Hey LD, thanks for commenting.

When merging the pages, you do need to be owner of both the pages, so you will need to claim the place. The only other thing you will need to do is rename the pages so that they have exactly the same name.

Other than that, you don’t need to have the same settings or anything else and all of the likes will be transferred over.

Let me know how you get on with the merging!

Hi, after searching forever i came to this place and I think its the nearest thing to what im looking for. I hope you can help!
So i created a facebook business page. and created a personal page which im an admin for my business page (apparently you have to do all this for functionality)
    My problems ;
    1. I dont have a map on my business page. I got a correct address and ive tried to claim other pages (as this comes up where i assume a map should appear under Edit page > Update Info and below the address area. There is no map here. FRUSTRATED.
    2. When i try to check-in i cant find my actual business page. what i do find are 2 other made up pages with my business name (which im trying to claim still).
All i want is a map and for people to be able to check-in to my actual business page and not this other page someone else just created because mine didnt exist at the time.
    please help!

    • http://www.stuffedweb.com/ Sam Scholfield

Hey VernonPO, I’m sorry to hear your having problems!

With no.1, your in the correct place for the map, try deleting your address, hitting the save button, then re-entering it again – just beneath where you enter the address, you should see a tick box that says something along the lines of “Show map on page”, tick that and away you go :).

Regarding your second question, I created another post just the other week that should be some use to you: http://www.stuffedweb.com/facebook-check-in-not-working-for-places/ – If that doesn’t help then let me know and I will see what else I can do :)

Hi Sam, thank you for a great and helpful article. I would actually like to do the opposite, that is turning my page from Page to Place, is that also possible? I have a photography studio (FB page from 2010) with a physical address so I guess it is an advantage to run the page as a Place rather than Page. Is there a way how to make this change? It is now set as “Local businesses” but shows up as a Page so I am confused.
    Thank you!

    • http://www.stuffedweb.com/ Sam Scholfield

Hey Milada, thanks for commenting! You certainly can turn a page into a place. As you have done, you need to change your category to local company, then add your address and click the save button at the bottom. A map should then appear near your address and you will be set to go.

The checkin functionality will take a few days before it kicks in, but that’s all there is too it :)

      I hope that helps,

Hey! So i have been going thru all these comments and I have tried several things with no luck. At this point I know many things have changed on Facebook Was wondering if you could provide some assistance or input since Facebook is unhelpful. I have a business page and place, with the correct address. People have been able to check in after searching for the business name, and it shows up in ‘Nearby’, but once you go to the page it does not have a check in button. I’ve seen other’s pages who are in similar categories so I’m just stumped as to why my page wont have it. I have not seen any duplicate accounts out there either.

    • Sana

Also, wanted to note that we tried Check-in Deals but had no success since clients were not able to check in a few months ago since our business was not showing up at all back then!

    • http://www.stuffedweb.com/ Sam Scholfield

      Hey Sana,

First off, I’m sorry for the slow reply, I was away last week.

Hm this is an interesting bug that I haven’t come across before. I would suggest removing your address from the page and turning off the check-in functionality, (remove address, click submit, click link that should appear near address feeds to remove check-in).

Once you have done that, re-enter your address, submit and turn on check-in functionality.

This should ‘flush’ the settings and will hopefully get things going again. – it may take a couple of days to update.

Let me know how you get on.

Hi, am a little stumped. a friend helped create a place, and ppl have liked this, how do I claim this to delete it as I now have my page up and running?

    • http://www.stuffedweb.com/ Sam Scholfield

Hey Chentelle, great to see you here.

You will need to go to the place, click the cog and click the ‘Is this your business?’ link. If that link doesn’t exist, it will be because someone has already claimed it, so I’m afraid it will be a matter of contacting Facebook directly – which they are notoriously unresponsive :(.

If you can claim the page as your own, then go into the settings and delete the page :)

I hope that helps, let me know how you get on.

        Hi Sam,
I have tried different browsers and none of them have admin options. I dont understand how Facebook has no protection for a business to be able to get some customer service to fix this bug. I was the only admin for the page so I couldnt have been deleted by someone else. Can you suggest anything else?

        • http://www.stuffedweb.com/ Sam Scholfield

Hi Miranda, I’m afraid the only sensible solution in this situation is to keep on posting to Facebook. If you mention you want to take out adverts, they quite often speed up their responses…

If that doesn’t work, you could try creating the new pages and merging them together. This *might* give you access again, however you do run a risk of this not working and losing the fans, so your call on that one!

I’m sorry your having these troubles and completely agree that Facebook really need better support! It’s incredible they don’t provide good service.

That was driving me nuts.. What a strange piece of logic.. If you enter an address it’s a place, if not it’s a person? My page is for my business so it’s not a place or a person – it’s a business – which also has an address that I would like people to know! Surely it would be really simple for FB to add an extra setting into the page properties that lets you specify if it’s a Person, Place or Business and do away with this bizarre rule?

Come on Facebook – sort it out :-)

    Thanks for useful information Sam.

On the FB app it still shows “X-amount were here” in the box right to the number of likes. Do you have any ideas for removing it? On FB mobile, ie a browser, it is not displayed. I’m assuming most people use app.

This was the situation when set up as “place” with check-in disabled. So I tried to change to “page”, but I still have same issue.

I’m starting to wonder if you have ever been place the number of check-ins will always display on the mobile app. The real big issue then when changing from place to page (or turning check-in off) is that check-ins will remain the same. It does not look god, for ex in my case 5,797 likes and only 11 were here.

    Any ideas?

Hi Haley, thanks for commenting. This is a very annoying problem I’ve faced myself. 2 solutions – 1) try a different browser, this sometimes works, 2) try again tomorrow – their systems seem to be temperamental when it comes to finding an address.
      Hope that helps!

I have started new job and have been given the task of building a facebook audience. The issue I have is that people aren’t able to “check in” at our business. The page is set up as a place with the map, address, hours and other info so I’m not sure what the issue might be any ideas?
